Chapter 16

It was a crazy race, Tay was a fast horse but not as fast as the stallions. The three boys raced past us about halfway down the path, and I was laughing louder than I had in years as they yelled out insults to each other.

Riding a horse wasn’t something I’d forgotten, though, and that made me feel good about it. In this case, it was just simply that the mare’s legs didn’t cover as much ground as the enormous stallion’s legs could cover.

The three black horses ate up the ground in massive leaps and bounds, and my little mare struggled to keep up.

I wasn’t too far behind when we got near the end though, and I saw Cole pull ahead of Noah and catch up to Zane.

I’d be willing to kiss any of them, and the excitement of watching them compete had my blood pumping and my stomach heated with burning desire, but I really was hoping Zane would win and kiss me again.

I was hoping he would claim me as his in front of his friends. That he would stand up to them and name me as his.

As they came close to the finish, they were almost lined up perfectly, but Cole leaned forward over his horse’s withers and curled his legs up like a jockey.

His horse jumped forward with a last-minute burst of speed, and he crossed ahead of the other two.

He dropped his feet, sat up, and pulled the reins to slow his horse and turn around.

Noah and Zane did the same, but I was having too much fun. I didn’t want this to end.

I pulled Tay to a skidding stop, spun her around, and headed back the way we came.

I heard the three of them exclaim in surprised displeasure and knew they’d be coming right behind me.

I kicked Tay, and she responded by giving me speed I didn’t know she had. I realized she was barn sour, she wanted to get back to her paddock and would do anything to get there.

I yanked on the reins, and she didn’t slow down, she grabbed the bit in her teeth and took control. I yelled at her, “Stop!” but she didn’t even flinch.

I see-sawed the reins trying desperately to gain control, but it didn’t work. She ran and ran, her breath coming deep and fast and the muscles of her body coiled and releasing until I wasn’t sure if I could hang on until we got back to the barn.

Zane galloped up beside us on Diablo and was laughing. “Okay, kitten, we get the point! You can stop now.”

“I can’t!” I wailed. “She’s out of control!”

“Oh shit, seriously?” he yelled.

“Seriously!” I cried out.

Noah and Cole joined us, their horses panting like freight trains as the four of us ran and ran.

The ground rumbled beneath our feet, and Zane reached out to grab hold of Tay’s bridle.

He lunged for it, but Tay swerved away, and he missed, almost falling off Diablo in the process.

“Fucking little bitch horse,” he cursed and righted himself.
